Last Day of Target is Quickly Approaching

 Is it time already?

I can't believe I'm writing this post, but, with the exception of my 2nd graders, next week is our last week of Target class for the year. 2nd grade met for the last time this week.

Parties and Celebrations:

We will have small class celebrations next week, so if you'd like to send in treats to share, please do. WE ARE A NUT FREE CLASSROOM, so please keep that in mind as you make your decisions.

In addition, by now everyone should have received information about our big, whole-department celebration on Saturday, May 21, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, at North Cooper Lake Park. Check your child's Target binder for all the details. A flyer is coming home with all students this week on their T day.

Supplies for Next Year:

As we end our year, I'm asking the students to keep some of their supplies for next year. Of course if they want to start the year with all new materials that's fine, but I don't want you to think you have to buy new stuff every year. The things students can reuse year after year in Target are:
  • binders
  • pencil pouches
  • tab dividers.

Beginning the Year:

We don't begin Target classes the first week of school. You'll receive information about our classes during your homeroom Meet & Greet, so be sure to listen for those slides during the presentation. The information we share is which Target teacher your child will have, which day his Target class meets, and supplies needed. We post this information too, so checking the blog is a good idea.

We Need to Change ALL Target Class Schedules Beginning April 25

We will see our students for the second half of the day for the next two class sessions.

Well, families, it's that time of year ALREADY! I can't believe I'm writing to tell you we need all our Target students (to report to their homeroom class for the next two full weeks. Your Target teachers need the mornings for Kindergarteners' Gifted Eligibility evaluations (so exciting!!).

Milestones is also being administered during this time, so even beyond the next two weeks, we might have to continue our half day schedule. We'll let you know as we find out more information.

Please remind your student each Target day to go to homeroom instead of our class.

We may not be in our classrooms, so to keep students from standing in the hallway confused (LOL), please remind them to report to homeroom instead. We'll post signs on our classroom doors too, but your help is so appreciated.

CCSD has three assessment windows: two in the first semester and one in this semester.

Target teachers adjust our regular schedule three times each year to allow us time to screen students for Gifted services based on the state's testing window. Testing is one of the few reasons we're allowed to cancel class, and given there are a few state testing periods throughout the year, additional adjustments are usually necessary. We communicate the changes with all parties involved  through CTLS posts, notes home, this blog now, and/or verbally in class to our students.

Target Supplies Needed on 1st Day of Class

Please notice the binder size; it matters. Students need a 1 1/2" binder. Anything smaller will not work. Anything bigger, and it won't fit in their book bag. Please get a 1 1/2" one. We need the sleeve on front and the clear pockets inside the front and back covers. Any color is fine, but we need those things, not a Trapper Keeper. That doesn't work for us.

Please do not open and remove the divider papers. We use them to mark our sections. But there are many different styles coming in that we can't get to work for us. The students bring in dividers with no paper inserts then we can't write on the tabs. We ask for an 8 pack because we sometimes need 6 (the 5 pack won't be enough). The students usually share their extras with other students or they just keep the extras in the back.

Students need a wide-rule spiral notebook. They cannot write small enough for college rule. We cover the front with a fun cover page, so the color does not matter. But we don't need a multiple subject one; the single subject one will be perfect.

They will keep their pencil pouch in the front of their binder, so pencil boxes won't work for us. The color of the pouch does not matter.

Please don't buy mechanical pencils. The students spend more time trying to figure out how to work them and looking for lead then they do working. Regular, #2 pencils are what we need.

The great news is they can use these materials year after year! There's no reason to buy new supplies for Target class each year. Usually students want new crayons and a new spiral notebook, but everything else can be used until they break or are leaving us for middle school.

Thank you so much!
